2. Dark chocolate may send good cholesterol up, bad cholesterol down

Consuming dark chocolate can improve several important risk factors for heart disease. In a controlled study, cocoa powder was found to significantly decrease oxidized LDL cholesterol in man. It also increased HDL and lowered total LDL for those with high cholesterol.

In a study of 470 elderly men, cocoa was found to reduce the risk of death from hearth disease by a whopping 50% over a 15 years period.

Another study revealed that eating chocolate two or more times per week lowered the risk of having calcified plague in the artering by 32%. Eating chocolate less frequently had no effect.

In a study published in 2017 the Journal of Community and Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives, the flavonoids in dark chocolate were found to reduce oxidative stress, which scientists think is the primary cause of insulin resistance. By improving your body’s sensitivity to insulin, resistance is reduced and in turn the risk of diseases like diabetes decreases.
